Fills full the wanton eye with May's delight

Hawthorn teachings at Beltaine...
Crataegus Oxycantha is a small tree of the Rose family that has always been associated with weddings, fertility and the pagan festival of Beltaine. The heart medicine of our land, Hawthorn is known as the Faery Tree and the Queen of Beltaine marking the cross quarter between Spring Equinox and Summer Solstice and heralding prayers for a fertile and abundant summer. Beltane means “white fire.” It derives from the Gaelic bealltainn and the Old Irish Bel(l)taine. The “Bel” of Beltane arises from PIE bhel meaning “shining white.” The “tainn” means fire. In the celebration of Beltaine, on May Day, this “white shining” refers to the hawthorn tree. White-barked hawthorn wood burns very hot—hot enough to melt pig iron. It literally gets white-hot. The Beltaine fires were always burnt to celebrate the start of the summer, the time when the maiden and young stag would unite, love and passions would ignite. Following on from this, the blossoms were traditionally worn by brides to enhance love and give blessings for their marriage, and also symbolising the joy and hope of the season
